Xiaomi, renowned for its innovative smartphones, has just hit the automotive headlines with the grand reveal of its maiden venture into electric vehicles—the Xiaomi SU7 sedan. The long-anticipated electric sedan, showcased by China's Ministry of Industry & Information Technology, boasts futuristic technology and style, designed to compete head-to-head with the Tesla Model 3.
The SU7, due to commence mass production at the BAIC plant in Beijing this December, marks Xiaomi's ambitious stride into the realm of sustainable mobility. A visual treat, the sedan flaunts a sleek, sophisticated design, characterized by 20-inch wheels, measuring 4,997mm in length, 1,963mm in width, and 1,455mm in height, with a wheelbase spanning 3,000mm. Weighing in at 1,980kg, this sedan is set to make a substantial impression on the road.

Set to revolutionize the market, the Xiaomi SU7 will be available in two variants: a single motor and a dual motor. The base model will wield a rear-mounted electric motor, generating an impressive 295 BHP, while the top-tier model, equipped with dual electric motors—one for each axle—will flex an astonishing 664 BHP. These powerhouses promise exhilarating performance, with both variants reaching a top speed of 210 km/h.
The SU7 offers customers the choice of LiDAR technology for advanced autonomous driving capabilities. Xiaomi's proprietary HyperOS, ensuring seamless integration between smartphones and the vehicle's infotainment system, amplifies the tech-savvy allure of this electric sedan.
This debutant car will be available in various trims: SU7, SU7 Pro, and SU7 Max, each catering to different power outputs and battery configurations. The SU7 line-up will feature a single electric motor for the RWD variant, delivering 295 BHP, while the AWD variant will boast an awe-inspiring 663 BHP, powered by dual motors—one on each axle.
The battery configurations for these trims exhibit a blend of cost-effectiveness and high-performance. The less expensive trims will house LFP battery packs from BYD, while the top-tier variants will be equipped with CATL's NMC battery packs. This impressive engineering, though translating to substantial weight (ranging from 1,980kg to 2,205kg), doesn't compromise the SU7's agility and prowess.
Scheduled for delivery as early as February 2024, the Xiaomi SU7 Unveiled is poised to carve its niche in the burgeoning electric vehicle landscape, signalling Xiaomi's foray into a new realm of sustainable mobility.

Interestingly, fellow tech giant and phone maker, Apple has been in the news for many years now, for developing a self-drive electric vehicle. But there has been no concrete news till date about the same. The closest speculated launch for the Apple car is 2026. Xiaomi appears to have won this tech battle, but more importantly has shown that a tech company can enter the automotive sector.
